Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients
  

Marinade
  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye) Cut into thin strips against the grain
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce Plus additional for the sauce
  • 3 tbsp oyster sauce Optional
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
Vegetables
  • 1 large onion, sliced
Sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch For thickening the sauce
Cooking Oil
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil For cooking the beef and onions
Seasoning
  • to taste salt and pepper

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, whisk together 2 tbsp soy sauce, 3 tbsp oyster sauce, ginger, garlic, and sesame oil. Toss the beef strips in the marinade and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
Cooking Onions
  1. Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from the pan and set aside.
Cooking Beef
  1. In the same pan, heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil over high heat. Add the marinated beef strips and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned.
Making Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch. Pour the sauce over the beef and let it simmer until thickened.
Combine & Serve
  1. Add the sautéed onions back into the pan, stirring to combine. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
