Preparation
- Chop the onion, garlic, and bell peppers into bite-sized pieces. Slice or crumble the Italian sausage based on your desired texture.
Cooking
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned and slightly crispy. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.
- Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell peppers to the skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
- Return the sausage to the skillet, then stir in the rice, diced tomatoes or tomato sauce, chicken broth, basil, oregano, and crushed red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook over low heat for about 20 minutes or until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let the dish rest, covered, for a few minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper before serving.
Notes
Use leftover veggies for additional flavor. Adjust the red pepper flakes for heat preference. Consider adding shredded cheese on top before serving for extra comfort.
