Homemade Salisbury Steak

Ingredients
  

For the Patties
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs Use fresh breadcrumbs for better texture.
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil For cooking the patties.
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Can be substituted with soy sauce and vinegar.
  • 2 tablespoons flour To thicken the gravy.
For Serving
  • Creamy mashed potatoes For serving with the Salisbury steak.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into patties.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add mushrooms and sauté until softened.
  4. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until the gravy thickens.
  5. Return patties to the skillet, covering them with gravy. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
  6. Serve Salisbury steak with creamy mashed potatoes.

Notes

Store leftover Salisbury steak in the fridge for about 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove until hot. Don’t skip the simmering step to let the flavors blend.
